Bowriders are among the most popular boat types in the country, and Stingray’s 220LX is one of the reasons. Its patented Z-plane hull features a notched transom that allows the drive to be mounted higher for less drag, and horizontal planing surfaces that reduce hull turbulence and give the prop cleaner water to bite into.

The 220LX’s standard features are too numerous to list, ranging from adjustable, molded helm seats and snap-out carpeting to oversize cupholders and power steering. Stingray’s convenience package gives you more than $2,000 worth of "extras" at no extra charge, including a Bimini top, a CD player, tilt steering and a magnetic compass, to name a few.

Fitting friends and family — as well as all of their gear — into a 22-foot layout isn’t easy, but Stingray has succeeded. A centerline storage locker with an oversized door can handle lots of water toys, and there’s a bow anchor locker and more storage forward, including an insulated icebox/storage box with a drain. The wrap-around bow seating is comfortable, and there’s a convenient, oversized stainless steel handrail on the gunwale. The large sunpad at the transom overlooks the integral swim platform with a standard multistep boarding ladder.

The cockpit is well protected by a tinted, wrap-around windshield that extends aft almost to the sunpad. Both the driver and his/her companion ride in the comfort of sporty, bolstered bucket seats. The helm features a custom Italian-style tilt steering wheel with stereo controls, a 12v power point, a full complement of backlit instruments and switches and a digital hourmeter. All-weather snap-in marine carpet, indirect cockpit lighting and oversize drink holders are also standard.

Stingray’s convenience package adds even more, such as a 2-inch fuel fill (easier to use, less backup or overflow), an electronic fuel-management system to optimize fuel economy, custom engine-vibration dampeners, a sport Bimini top, hull graphics and a Kenwood stereo system. Then, you can sprinkle on the options, like nuts on a sundae. Practical options include power trim tabs, a mooring cover, cockpit and bow covers, full canvas with side curtains and an extended swim platform. You can also upgrade the Kenwood stereo and add remotes around the boat. Other cool options include a two-tone hull and Liquid Metal or Checkerboard hull graphics.

We tested the 220LX on South Carolina’s Lake Robinson. Our test boat came powered with Volvo’s 300 hp 5.7Gi mated to its SX (single-prop) drive, and with this stout V8 powerplant, the boat planed in less than 4 seconds. Its 0-30 mph acceleration sprints averaged just 5.4 seconds.

Optimum cruising speed was 26 mph with the engine turning 2500 rpm. At that speed, we saw an impressive fuel economy of 5 mpg. Push it up another 500 rpm, to 3000, and the boat jumps to 34 mph with little loss in fuel efficiency (4.4 mpg). At 4900 rpm, our test boat topped out at 60.1 mph while still averaging 2.6 mpg.

Steering was very responsive, even at high speeds. The prop never lost its bite in hard turns, and the driver feels in control at all times. We attribute the 220LX’s impressive acceleration, top speed and fuel economy to its Z-plane hull, which greatly reduces drag. Stingray knocked one right out of the ballpark with the 220LX.
